Dr. David Furth was kind enough to ID this beetle, in part by examining specimens of this species collected by the 1911 Yale Peruvian expedition. This expedition is most famous for visiting Machu Pichu—the first visit by scholars.

The original description of the species was made in 1905, and was based on a type specimen collected in Bolivia. The author, Martin Jacoby, placed the species in genus Oedionychus.
