Length: 57 - 60 mm
Aeshna sitchensis is all dark on the dorsal surface of the thorax. The sides of the abdomen have the zigzag stripes referred to by the common name; these are in light blue or sometimes yellow.
Favored habitats include marshes, lakes, and streams. In the southern part of its range Aeshna sitchensis is typically found at high elevations.
