Stenochironomus sp.

Non-biting Midges

Family: Chironomidae

Subfamily: Chirononinae

Tribe: Chirononini

Stenochironomus is a monophyletic genus found over much of the world. Look for these midges near running water.

Borkent (1984) summarized the larval traits this way:  "A dorsoventrally compressed head capsule, expanded thoracic segments and a long, flaccid abdomen."

Adults typically are greenish with dark markings on the wings and abdomen. The very long front legs are often held in a backswept way.
