Cyrtolobus vau

Vau's Treehopper

Cyrtolobus vau, Bur Oak Treehopper

Family: Membracidae

Subfamily: Smiliinae

Tribe: Smiliini

Length: 5.5 - 6.5 mm

Over most of its range, at least, Cyrtolobus vau overwinters in the egg stage. Eggs are laid on Bur Oak and other Oak species. The eggs hatch in the Spring and the nymphs mature by June in most areas.

The hopper shown here had its portrait made in Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba. This spot appears to be near the northern and western limits of the species' range.
