Nersia cf. florens

Dictyopharid Planthopper

Nersia cf. florens, a Neotropical Dictyopharid Planthopper

Family: Dictyopharidae

Subfamily: Dictyopharinae

Three genera of Dictyopharinae have a pale line from the apex of the head to the wing base.  In genus Nersia and Retiala the line is pale, while in Trimedia it is a darker green.

Nersia (13 species) is found from Illinois and Kansas south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile.  The species N. florens ranges from Illinois to Brazil and Peru.  It appears that there are some undescribed species hiding in this genus; the adults look like described species, but the nymphs are different and feed on different host plants.

Determined by Dr. Lois O'Brien, Green Valley, Arizona.
