Synecdoche grisea

Achilid Planthopper

Synecdoche grisea, Planthopper

Family: Achilidae

Length: typically 5.4 - 5.8 mm

The hopper shown here was photographed in July, about five feet off the ground on the trunk of a living tree.

Marshall (2006) reports that Achilidae are relatively rare, "most likely to be found among loose bark, where some have the very unusual (for homopterans) habit of feeding on fungi."
