Photo notes: In all three photos, the downy yellowjacket is attracted by the carcass of a katydid. In the bottom photo, a European Hornet is also enjoying the feast. Notice the great difference in size between the two wasps.

The specific epithet, flavopilosa, means yellow-haired (downy).
